Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. Stored in your air conditioner’s coils, refrigerants are liquids that cool and dehumidify your air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. For years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce as a result of its damage to the environment. Introducing R-410A To lessen environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now designed to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and contains no chlorine, so it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel great about using this refrigerant in Rochester because it’ll help make your system operate efficiently, reliably and quietly, and provide the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made anytime before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You may want to investigate upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately phased out. The old refrigerant will become hard to find in the next few years, costing you more to use your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Brogan Heating & AC Inc work with R-410A, so you can rest assured we have an AC or heat pump you can better rely on. Be sure to avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
